HOLSTON, Charles Auburn, 83, a native of Hale County, Alabama, and a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2006. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC), 6000 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, Alabama with Rev. Dr. John Ed Mathison, Rev. Reed Wilbanks and Rev. Earl Andrews officiating. Interment will follow in the Alabama Heritage Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2006, from 1-2 p.m. at Frazer Memorial UMC.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Pope Johnson Holston; daughter, Anne Auburn Holston (Ron) Meininger; sons, Charles Mark (Yvonne) Holston, Sr., and Gregory Todd (Jo-Ann) Holston; sis-ter, Louise Holston (Paul) Griffice; grandchildren, Charles Mark Hol-ston, Jr., Charles Louis Meininger, Matthew Patrick Holston, Amy Pope Meininger, Jacob Todd Holston, and Emily Grace Holston. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Commander Holston was a career officer in the U.S. Navy. His duties included service in the U.S. Marine Corps, 2nd Marine Division, at Guadalcanal, on destroyers and aircraft carriers, the U.S.S. Abercrombie (DE-343), U.S.S. Charles P. Cecil (DDR-835), U.S.S. Kearsage (CV-33), and aboard the attack cargo transport U.S.S. Capricornus (AKA-57). His shore assignments included Pensacola, FL, Charleston, SC, Newport, RI, Chicago, IL, Corpus Christi, TX, San Diego, CA, Boston, MA, and Washington, DC, where he was head of Manpower Requirements at Navy Department level. After retirement from the U.S. Navy, he held positions in Montgomery as Associate Director, Alabama Hospital Association; Chief, Teachers Retirement Systems of the State of Alabama; and church administrator, Frazer Memorial UMC. Commander Holston was active as a volunteer at Frazer Memorial UMC, the Walk to Emmaus community, and the U.S. Marine Corps League in Montgomery. He was an alumnus of the George Washington University, Washington, DC, where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees.
