November 10, 2025 – The state of Alabama hosted a USMC Birthday Cake cutting ceremony in the Governor’s Office this morning, 10 November, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundations plans to celebrate the USMC in the 50 State Capitals.

Due to the Government Shut down, local Montgomery Area Marines, stepped up to honor our Corps with traditional components of the USMC Annual Cake Cutting Ceremonies.

Townsend Detachment Jr Past Commandant Mike Jeffries read the traditional Order from General Lejeune, establishing the Marine Corps annual birthday observance.

Townsend Detachment Member Ferris Danley read Commandant Smith’s greetings to all Marines on this the 250th Birthday.

Townsend Detachment Junior Vice Commandant read the Cake Cutting script with Mike Jefferies serving as the oldest Marine and Ferris Danley serving as the youngest Marine.

Townsend Detachment Commandant Nancy Burtron cut the cake, without the sword, and gave the first piece to the guest of honor, the Governor of Alabama, and the Second piece to the Oldest Marine Present.

The cake was provided by way of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundations diligent efforts to have the cake donated to each state in the Union.  The cake was baked and decorated by the students of the “Bishop State Community College” Culinary Department in Mobile Alabama. The cake was delivered to the State Capital by USMC Sergeant Anthony Patton, who now works as a member of the Bishop State Community College Police Force.

This event took place in the Governors Office with members of Auburn and Alabama Iron Ruck organizers as observers.
