HOWELL, Robert Lewis, born December 3, 1920, into the family of Thomas G. Howell and Myrtle Brock Howell, passed away on July 8, 2008.
Robert entered the U.S. Marine Corps in Birmingham, AL on February 10, 1942. He was stationed at Parris Island, SC and Norfolk, VA before shipping out to New Zealand to join the 2nd Marine Division where he trained as a heavy machine gun crewman. In the 2nd Division, he participated in action against the enemy at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, Saipan, Marianas Islands and Tinian, Marianas Islands. He was in Hawaii training for the invasion of Japan when the war was over. He was discharged October 3,1945. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he worked until he retired from Civil Service in the library at Maxwell Air Force Base. Later he also worked as a security guard at St. Margaret’s Hospital and Jefferson Davis High School until he finally retired. Robert is now with his shipmates. Robert was a member of the Progress Sunday School Class at Capitol Heights United Methodist Church, a member of the 2nd Division Association, Sons of the Confederate Veterans and a Charter Member of the Townsend Detachment of the Marine Corps League. He was an avid exerciser at Hogan’s Gym. When the Supreme Commandant calls, you must be ready to answer muster and take your place to guard the streets of Heaven.
Funeral services will be at Capitol Heights United Methodist Church, 2000 Winona Ave. on Saturday, June 12, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Sara Shaver officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 – 10:30 at the church.
He leaves behind his fellow Marines of the Marine Corps League, three loyal friends, Bill Burleson, Peggy Slaton and Robert Cheney and members of his church. Pallbearers will be members of the Marine Corps League. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Progress Sunday School Class of Capitol Heights Methodist Church.
